No. 22 Coastal Carolina Visits Clemson on Tuesday

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Clemson men’s soccer team is set to face its fourth 2018 regular season opponent from the state of South Carolina when Coastal Carolina visits Historic Riggs Field on Tuesday.

Clemson Notes:

  • Clemson most recently saw action on Friday night in a 4-1 loss to No. 14 Virginia at Historic Riggs Field. Tanner Dieterich netted the Tigers’ lone goal in the 47th minute on a shot from 24 yards out through traffic that proved to be his third goal of the season.
  • Adrian Nuñez leads the team with five goals on the year, and that combined with one assist, on Dieterich’s goal on Friday night, give him 11 points on the year. However, the Tigers have had a variety of players contributing to scoring this season, with 15 players tallying at least one point so far.
  • Aside from Nuñez and Dieterich, seven Tigers have all found the back of the net at least once this season: Quinn McNeill (2), Grayson Barber (1), Patrick Bunk-Andersen (1), Andrew Burnikel (1), Malick Mbaye (1), John Murphy Jr. (1) and Kimarni Smith (1).
  • Charlie Asensio, Barber, Burnikel, Nate Hall, Johnny Heckman, Justin Malou, Chris Matlashewski, Smith and Cale Thorne have all added at least one assist.
  • Keeper Jonny Sutherland has seen the majority of action in goal for the Tigers, totaling 20 saves against 15 goals allowed in 797 minutes over 9 matches. However, George Marks has also seen time, playing all 110 minutes of the Tigers’ double-overtime match against UMass as his collegiate debut in addition to every minute of Clemson’s matches against College of Charleston and Pitt. Through the three matches, Marks has allowed three goals against six saves. Nolan Lennon played the final 11 minutes of the Tigers’ match against Furman and allowed one goal.
  • The Tigers are led by team captains Bunk-Andersen and Dieterich.

Coastal Carolina Notes:

  • The Chanticleers most recently saw action in a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Appalachian State in their Sun Belt opener on Friday night. Senior forward Yazeed Matthews netted the Coastal goal in the 71st minute to give the Chanticleers the lead, but the Mountaineers scored twice in the next seven minutes to seal the come-from-behind win.
  • Matthews leads the Chants with four goals and three assists, good for 11 points.
  • Aside from Matthews, seven other Coastal players have found the back of the net this season: Tsiki Ntsabeleng (3), Tyrone Mondi (2), Saif AlHamali (1), Jorge Calix (1), Henrik Mueller (1), Jeranimo Power (1) and Ryan Willoughby (1).
  • Senior keeper Chris Dattalo has played the majority of minutes in goal for the Chanticleers, allowing 13 goals against 31 saves in 827 minutes over nine matches.Sophomore Lance DaSilva has played 11 minutes and has neither a save nor a goal allowed.

Series Notes:

  • The Tigers and Chanticleers met twice in 2017, once in the preseason, a matchup that saw a 3-1 Tiger victory, and once in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, a matchup that saw the Chanticleers advance after they earned a 3-1 win.
  • In the previous 14 iterations of the series, the teams have only played away from Historic Riggs Field one time, a scoreless draw in 2016 at CCU Stadium.
  • Five of the 14 meetings between Clemson and Coastal have seen overtime played.
  • Dating back to 1985, Clemson holds an 8-3-3 advantage in the series.
