No. 2 Clemson Readies for ACC Quarterfinals

Clemson, S.C. –The second-ranked Clemson men’s soccer team will welcome the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to Historic Riggs Field as the teams are set to engage in ACC quarterfinal action on Sunday, Nov. 10 at 7:10 p.m. Sunday’s match comes nine days after the Tigers captured the Atlantic Division regular season title following a dominant 3-0 victory over the NC State Wolfpack on Nov. 1. The regular season title also gave the Tigers the top overall seed in the ACC tournament, a first for the program since 1998.

Series Notes

  • Sunday night’s match is the second meeting this season and tenth overall between the two teams. The Tigers have outscored the Fighting Irish by a 13-12 margin over the series.
  • The two sides met earlier this season in Notre Dame, Ind., with the Tigers winning, 4-2.
  • Sunday’s quarterfinal match is a rematch of last season’s ACC tournament first-round contest.
  • The teams have met two times prior in ACC tournament history. This will be the first time the two teams meet in the quarterfinal round.

Clemson Notes

  • Clemson’s No. 2 ranking was complemented by the Tigers’ earning the sixth position in the NCAA RPI and fourth position in the NCAA’s initial Top 16 rankings.
  • This is the first time since the Aug. 30 and Sept. 6 polls in 2016 that Clemson has slotted into the No. 2 position in consecutive weeks.
  • Head Coach Mike Noonan is experiencing the best start to a season in his tenure at Clemson. Before this season, Noonan’s best start was in 2015, when the team went 13-1-2 through the opening 16 games.
  • Clemson is led in scoring, assists and points by Robbie Robinson, a junior forward from Camden, S.C.
  • Clemson is home to the nation’s most prolific scoring offense, with the team averaging 3.75 goals per game.
  • The Tigers are on pace to post the nation’s best scoring offense average in the past 20 years, eclipsing UNC-Greensboro’s 3.64 from 1998.
  • Clemson leads the country in seven statistical categories and is ranked within the top 20 of five additional categories.
  • The Clemson goalkeepers combined to log eight shutouts during the regular season, with George Marks leading the charge with five of his own.

Notre Dame Notes

  • Notre Dame is led by second-year head coach Chad Riley, who joined the program after leading Dartmouth for five years.
  • Notre Dame hosted an early round ACC Championship match for the seventh straight season when the Irish defeated Boston College on Tuesday.
  • The Irish have reached at least the tournament quarterfinals in all seven seasons as a member of the ACC.
  • Sophomore striker Jack Lynn has scored a team-high nine goals to lead the Irish attack.
