No. 15 Women?s Tennis Grounds Eagles Sunday

CLEMSON, SC – The 15th-ranked Clemson women’s tennis team took down Boston College, 6-1, on a breezy Sunday afternoon at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center. Clemson won its fifth straight match overall, and improved to 9-5 on the season and 4-1 in the ACC. Clemson improved their all-time mark to 8-0 against the Eagles (7-5, 1-4 ACC). Next up, the Tigers are heading into arguably the most challenging weekend of the season, playing at No. 1 North Carolina and at No. 7 Duke on back-to-back days next weekend.  Clemson went with a new doubles lineup, and it paid off as the Tigers won on all three courts. Koroleva and Gumulya won 8-5 on court one in their first action together since the fall. On court two, Liz Jeukeng and Romy Koelzer played together for the second time this season,and won 8-5 to improve to 1-1. On court three, Tristen Dewar and Ani Miao played together for the first time ever, an 8-6 win.   In singles play, No. 49 Beatrice Gumulya improved to 17-4 with her 6-3, 6-0 win over Kelly Barry on court three. The Tiger sophomore is now 28-4 in her last 32 matches.  She was followed shortly after by No. 16 Yana Koroleva, who extended her winning streak to seven in a row with her 6-3, 6-2 win over Jessica Wacnik. Koroleva improved to 10-3 at flight one, 5-0 in the ACC, and 16-6 overall this season.  Tristen Dewar clinched the match with her win on court six, a 6-3, 6-3 win over Katya Vasilyev. It was her fifth straight win, and she improved to 3-2 in ACC play.  Romy Koelzer pulled out her match in three sets after taking the first and dropping the second set. Her 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win was her 16th of the season as she improved to 4-1 in conference play.  One of the finest efforts of the day game from No. 42 Liz Jeukeng, who dropped her first set and trailed, 5-2 in the second set against BC senior Alex Kelleher. The Tiger freshman battled back with three straight games, including two breaks, to tie the set at 5-5. Kelleher then broke Jeukeng before the Tiger freshman broke back to force a tiebreaker.  Jeukeng won the tiebreaker, 7-2 to force a third set, and won the super-tiebreak third set, 10-5.
