No. 15 @ClemsonWTennis Ups ACC Record to 3-0

CLEMSON, SC – The 15th-ranked Clemson women’s tennis team defeated No. 38 Wake Forest, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center. The Tigers (10-3, 3-0 ACC) played in front of a strong crowd in what as its final home match until April 4. The Demon Deacons fall to 8-3, and 1-3 in league play with the loss.  Clemson will now play six straight away from home before finishing with five of the last six on its home courts.  Once again, the Tigers took care of business in doubles play, earning the doubles point for the 12th time in 13 matches. Romy Koelzer and Tristen Dewar started the day off with a convincing 8-3 victory on court two while Yana Koroleva and Beatrice Gumulya won 8-4 on court one. Koelzer and Dewar played virtually flawless to begin the match, taking an early 7-1 lead. However, Wake Forest tried to battle their way back into the match winning the next two games before the Tigers finished them off 8-3. The match between Koroleva and Gumulya against Xue Zhang and Kasey Gardiner was evenly matched in the beginning as the early score was 4-3. The Tigers then went on a 4-1 run to clinch the match 8-3 and earning the point for Clemson.  On court three, Jessy Rompies and Ani Miao jumped out of the gate to take a 7-0 lead over Andrea Retolaza and Kimmy Guerin, however the Wake duo fought back to make it 7-5 before the match was called. The most dominating effort of the day came on court two in singles play. Romy Koelzer opened with a strong effort, defeating Kimmy Guerin 6-1, 6-1. A pair of Tiger victories soon followed on courts one and two. Beatrice Gumulya, playing on court two, won decisively 6-2, 6-1. The victory puts her at .500 in dual matches this year at 5-5. Yana Koroleva, ranked 41st in the nation, earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory. After falling behind early in the second set, Koroleva rattled off three straight games to get the match win.  Tristen Dewar continued her hot streak, winning her match in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. She is now riding a six match winning streak and is 9-2 in dual match play on the season. Jessy Rompies, who was also on a five match win streak coming into the game, battled Kasey Gardiner of Wake Forest in a three-set thriller, but ultimately fell 7-5, 6-3, 10-6. Clemson will hit the road for six straight matches starting with Notre Dame on Friday, March 7. The match will begin at 4 pm from the Courtney Tennis Center in South Bend, IN.
