No. 15 @ClemsonWTennis 4-0 in ACC Play After Win at Notre Dame Friday

NOTRE DAME, IN – The 15th-ranked Clemson women’s tennis team defeated No. 31 Notre Dame, 5-2, on Friday at the Eck Tennis Pavilion. Clemson (11-3, 4-0 ACC) won its fourth straight while the Fighting Irish fall to 5-6 overall and 0-4 in the ACC with the loss. The match saw four singles matches go to a third set, with the Tigers claiming three of the decisions en route to the victory. Clemson is now 20-4 in ACC singles matches and 8-0 in ACC doubles matches.  Once again, the Tigers began the day by capturing the doubles point for the 13th time in 14 matches, improving the Tigers to 27-5 in dual match doubles play. Ani Miao and Jessy Rompies, playing on court three, cruised to an easy 8-2 victory over monica Robinson and Jane Fennelly of Notre Dame. Rompies is now 22-4 on the season in doubles with all doubles partners. On court one, Yana Koroleva and Beatrice Gumulya won 8-4, clinching the point for the Tigers. This match was tied at three games apiece early on, but the Tiger pair won five straight games to earn the victory. Both tiger duos improve to 7-1 in dual match play this season and Koroleva and Gumulya have won seven straight.  Tristen Dewar and Romy Koelzer led 7-4 on court two, but the match was left unfinished. Singles play provided a mix bag of results with almost every possible result occurring.  Romy Koelzer, ranked 67th in the nation and playing on court two, earned a key point for the Tigers winning 6-2, 6-4. It was the German’s fourth straight-set victory in a row, with each of the last three coming in the second position in the lineup.  In the sixth flight, Jessy Rompies battled Julia Vrabel in a three set thriller. Rompies won the first set 6-4 but dropped the second set 6-3. Not letting that get to her, she won the final set 6-1 to earn the point. Rompies has now won six of her last seven overall, and improves to 11-7 on the year, 7-3 in duals. In an equally thrilling match, Beatrice Gumulya won in three sets over Jennifer Kellner. After losing the first set, Gumulya battled back in the second to force a decisive third set. After falling down 4-1, she once again fought back to win 7-6, earning the fourth point for the Tigers, clinching the match. Koroleva earned her 17th singles win of the season, a comeback 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 victory on court one over Britney Sanders. She’s now 45-14 (.763) in her career.  Notre Dame earned their two points on courts four and five. Mary Closs defeated Ani Miao in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 while Monica Robinson beat Tristen Dewar in a three set match 3-6, 7-6, 6-4. Dewar’s loss ends her streak of six straight matches won, which had been a team high. The Tigers will now travel to Pittsburgh for the programs’ first-ever meeting.
