No. 11 Tigers Begin 2018 at Creighton, Omaha

CLEMSON, S.C. – The No. 11 Clemson men’s soccer team is set to open its 2018 campaign with a two-match road trip to visit Creighton and Omaha.

Clemson Notes:

  • Clemson is ranked No. 11 in the United Soccer Coaches preseason poll after finishing the 2017 season with a 12-6-1 record and making its fifth consecutive and 31stall-time NCAA Tournament appearance.
  • Clemson’s 2018 roster is an even mix of returners and newcomers, with 14 Tiger veterans and 14 new faces making up the team.
  • Clemson’s 2018 recruiting class was ranked No. 3 in the country in TopDrawerSoccer’s final recruiting rankings, placing it behind the classes of UCLA and Wake Forest.
  • Goalkeeper Jonny Sutherland, a graduate transfer from ETSU, was named to the 2018 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List as one of just four goalkeepers on the 32-player list.
  • Midfielder John Murphy Jr. was named to TopDrawerSoccer’s Preseason Best XI Freshman team.
  • Clemson was picked to finish second in the Atlantic Division in 2018, a spot above their 2017 finish, according to a preseason vote of the conference’s 12 head coaches. Clemson received four first-place votes in the division, placing it behind reigning ACC Champion Wake Forest, which was picked as the Atlantic Division favorite with eight first-place votes.
  • The Tigers are led by team captains Patrick Bunk-Andersen and Tanner Dieterich.

Creighton Notes:

  • The Bluejays won all three of their preseason exhibition matches: a 2-1 win over Omaha, Clemson’s other opponent on this road trip, a 2-0 victory over Ohio State, and a 2-1 defeat of Northern Illinois.
  • Creighton finished 9-7-2 overall and 3-4-2 in the BIG EAST in 2017.
  • Creighton’s 2017 campaign ended in the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament when the Bluejays fell to St. John’s, 3-1.

Series Notes:

  • Friday night’s match will be the regular season opener for both teams.
  • Clemson leads the overall series 2-0, with both victories coming in 1-0 fashion at home. The first meeting was a top-15 matchup in 2005, when Clemson was ranked No. 15 and Creighton No. 11. The most recent meeting was in 2016.

Omaha Notes:

  • The Mavericks dropped both exhibition matches of their preseason: a 2-1 loss to Creighton, and a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Green Bay.
  • Omaha finished 10-6-3 overall and 2-1-2 in the Summit League in 2017.
  • Last season, the Mavericks won their first Summit League Tournament title after an 11-round PK shootout and earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. However, they fell to No. 13 FIU, 2-0, in the first round of the tournament to conclude their historic 2017 campaign.

Series Notes:

  • This will be the first meeting between the Tigers and Mavericks.
