NCAA Tennis Selections To Air Tuesday On ESPNews

April 27, 2009

CLEMSON, SC – Bids for the 2009 NCAA Division I men’s and women’s tennis tournaments will be announced on Tuesday, Apr. 28. The selection show will air at approximately 5:20 pm Eastern time on ESPNews. Both Clemson programs are looking for an invitation to this year’s national tournament, which is scheduled to begin on May 8.

The fields consist of 64 teams divided into 16 regional sites that will take place over the May 8-10 weekend. The winners will then advance to the NCAA Championships, which will be held in College Station, TX this year. The round of 16 is scheduled to start on May 15.

Currently ranked at #12 in the Campbell/ITA Tennis poll, the Tiger women’s team should be a lock for a bid and hopes to extend its regional hosting streak to six straight. The top-16 ranked teams have historically earned the hosting opportunity and Clemson has played host to a regional in each of the past five years. The Tigers boast a 17-7 record in 2009 and finished third in the conference standings with a 9-2 league record.

The Clemson men’s team is listed 66th in the most recent poll and owns an 11-13 record for the season. Although the Tigers were absent from last year’s NCAA Tournament, Clemson had earned an invitation in the previous five seasons.

The list of individuals selected to the singles and doubles championships will be released on Wednesday evening.
