Pinehurst, NC – Clemson rising junior Phillip Mollica won his fifth consecutive match with a 2 & 1 victory over Aaron Pike of Brisbane, Australia on Saturday at the 107th North-South Amateur in Pinehurst, NC. Mollica now advances to the 36 hole championship match on Sunday where he will meet Raymond Sheedy IV of Keymar, MD. The tournament is being played on the famed Pinehurst #2 course in Pinehurst, NC. It will be the site of the 2008 United States Amateur.
Mollica has won his last two matches in dramatic fashion. His match with Pike lasted until the 17th hole, and he previously defeated Scott Barton of Dallas, TX in 19 holes in the semifinals. Mollica never led in the quarterfinal match with Barton until he putted out on the 19th and final hole.
Mollica won the Monroe Amateur last summer, but a victory in the North-South Amateur would top that in terms of prestige. Past winners of the North-South include Jack Nicklaus (1959), Curtis Strange and Davis Love.
The match will begin at 7:30 AM on Sunday. Sheedy will be a formidable opponent. On Saturday, he defeated Wake Forest All-American Webb Simpson.
