Former East Carolina Star Lucas Augustsson Transfers to Clemson

CLEMSON, S.C. — Lucas Augustsson, a two-time first-team All-AAC selection at East Carolina will be joining the Clemson men’s golf program as a transfer, Tigers head coach Jordan Byrd announced on Tuesday.  Augustsson played two years at East Carolina and will have two years of eligibility at Clemson.

Augustsson was East Carolina’s top player each of the last two seasons when he posted a 72.06 stroke average for 24 events.  He recorded 11 career top 10 finishes for the Pirates, ninth in the the history of the program even though he played just two years.

“We are pleased to have Lucas join our program,” said Byrd, who guided the Tigers to the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional Championship this past year.  “He comes to our program with considerable experience, including international experience.  He is playing for the Swedish National Team today in the European Team Championships.

“Lucas won four tournaments at East Carolina and had program record setting results.  He is also an outstanding student (3.9 GPA). Lucas will spend the rest of the summer playing in tournaments in Europe and will come to Clemson in August.”

Augustsson won a program record four tournaments over his two years with the East Carolina program, two each year.  This past season he won the Ironwood Collegiate Classic and the Cutler Creek Intercollegiate.  His first round 63 on the way to the Ironwood Collegiate championship tied for the best 18-hole score in East Carolina history.  His 15-under-par 201score  at Ironwood tied for the fourth lowest tournament score in Pirates history.

The native of Halmstad, Sweden posted a   71.29 stroke average this past year,  the second best in East Carolina history.  When he was named All-AAC this past year, he became just the eighth golfer in school history to be a multiple season all-conference golfer.  He had seven top 10 finishes in his 12 events this past year.  He finished the year with 13 rounds at par-or-better.

As a freshman in 2022-23,  Augustsson posted a 72.78 stroke average on the way to earning All-AAC honors.   He won the East Carolina Intercollegiate and the Cutter Creek Intercollegiate, the first or his two wins at Cutter Creek.

One of the highlights of his freshman year was a third-place finish at the conference championships, where he carded three consecutive rounds in the 60s.  His opening round 68 was the best ever by an East Carolina golfer at the league tournament.  In addition to earning All-AAC honors over the course as a freshman, he also was named to the American Athletic Conference All-Academic team.
