CLEMSON, SC – Ani Mijacika, a sophomore on the Clemson women’s tennis team, will open play on Thursday at the 2007 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships. This year’s event will be held at The Racquet Club of Columbus and will be hosted by The Ohio State University.
Mijacika was seeded fourth in the field of 32 and will face Baylor’s Lenka Broosova in Thursday’s opening round. She earned her invitation to the elite event after reaching the finals of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships earlier this month. Mijacika boasts a 7-1 record for the fall with wins over five ranked opponents and was listed at #21 in the preseason Fila/ITA Tennis poll.
The Tigers have now had a player selected to the ITA National Indoor in each of the past six seasons, and Mijacika has become the third different student-athlete to compete in the tournament in the last three years. Current senior Carol Salge reached to the second round in last year’s event, while now-junior Federica van Adrichem earned a bid as a freshman in 2005. Prior to that, former Clemson standout Julie Coin was a three-time participant, advancing as far as the semifinals in 2004.
