Men’s Soccer to Play in ACC Tournament on Thursday

The Clemson men’s soccer team will play North Carolina in the first round of the ACC Tournament on Thursday, November 14, at 8:00 p.m. at the SAS Soccer Complex, in Cary, NC.

Clemson is seeded sixth in the tournament while North Carolina is seeded third. The winner of this match will play the winner of the Maryland-N.C. State match on Friday night at 8:00 p.m. Last season, the Tigers won the ACC Championship with a 3-1 win over Maryland and a 2-1 win over North Carolina. In the Championship match, Clemson defeated Virginia 1-0. Last year’s ACC Tournament was at Riggs Field, in Clemson, SC.

Clemson is ranked 12th by Soccer America and 21st by the NSCAA. The Tigers are ranked 12th by Soccertimes.com. Clemson is 11-3-3 on the year. The Tigers are 2-3-1 in the ACC this season. Dimelon Westfield is Clemson’s leading scorer with 37 points. He has 17 goals and three assists this season. Fabio Tambosi has 11 assists to lead the team. Should Westfield score 20 goals this season, he would become the first Tiger player since Wojtek Krakowiak in 1998 to reach the 20-goal plateau.

Clemson has a 10-11-3 record in the ACC Tournament since it first started in 1987. Clemson has won the ACC Tournament twice (1998 and 2001). Clemson has played in the championship match five times (1992, 1993, 1995, 1998, and 2001). Clemson Head Coach Trevor Adair has a 7-4-1 mark in the ACC Tournament since his first year as head coach of the Tigers in the 1995 season.

This will be the 45th meeting between Clemson and North Carolina on the soccer field. Clemson leads the overall series 23-15-6. This season, North Carolina defeated the Tigers 3-1 at Clemson, SC on November 3. In the ACC Tournament, Clemson has a 3-4 record vs. the Tar Heels, but the Tigers have won three of the last four matches vs. North Carolina in the ACC Tournament.
