Aug. 27, 2003

The ninth-ranked Clemson men’s soccer team will play its season-opening match against Richmond on Friday at 5:30 p.m. in the first game of the Virginia Commonwealth Invitational.

Even though the Tigers lost five starters off last season’s squad, Clemson looks to improve upon last year’s success and try to make another long run in the NCAA Tournament.

Clemson returns a solid senior class, including returning leading scorer Steven Rhyne (7 g, 9a) and midfielder Kenneth Cutler. The Tigers will also look to senior forwards Andre Borges and Paul Souders to bring exerience to the team and make an immediate impact.

Once again, Clemson has brought in a strong recruiting class, ranked 11th in the nation, including United States U-17 National Team members Adrian Chevannes, Phil Marfuggi, and Olatomiwa Ogunsola.

Head coach Trevor Adair leads the Tigers in his ninth season at the helm. The Clemson program has been ranked in the top 10 in the nation in five of his eight previous seasons, and has four NCAA Tournament Quarterfinal appearances including the 2002 season.

The Tigers will conclude the VCU Invitational as they take on the host team on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. Clemson returns for its home opener on September 10 as it plays host to Winthrop.
