Men’s Soccer Gets First Win Of Season

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The #4 ranked Clemson Tigers defeated the Ohio State Buckeyes 2-1 today September 5 in men’s intercollegiate soccer at Jesse Owens Memorial Field. It was the final match of the 1999 Ohio State/Nike Classic. The Tigers finished the tournament with a record of 1-1.

Clemson improves to 1-2 overall while Ohio State falls to 1-1.

The first half saw all the scoring action for the match. Freshman Fabio Tambosi (Sao Paulo, Brazil) scored his first goal as a Tiger in the 34th minute. He was unassisted. The Buckeyes managed to tie the game in the 44th minute when Senior Trey Halberdier took an assist from Jason Cimineri and shot the ball past Clemson senior keeper Josh Cambpell (Baltimore, MD).

Junior Mark Lisi (Englewood, CO) scored just before the first half was over on a penalty kick that would prove to be the game-winning goal. It was Lisi’s first of the year.

Clemson had three players on the all-tournament team. Senior Russell Keiffer (Westerville, OH), Senior Matt Elliot (Tallahassee, FL) and Sophomore Ross Goodacre (Hastings, New Zealand) all made the team for the Tigers.

Clemson will return to action next Sunday September 12 when they will travel to Chapel Hill to take on the North Carolina Tar Hells in the first ACC match of the year for the Tigers. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m..
