Men’s Soccer Falls to No. 2 Santa Clara

CLEMSON, S.C.–Santa Clara scored two goals in the final 3:58 of the game including one goal with only 10 seconds left in regulation as the second-ranked Broncos edged Clemson 2-1 in the second game of the 24th annual Clemson/Nike Soccer Invitational at Clemson, SC Friday night.

Santa Clara is ranked second in the NSCAA poll and fourth by Soccer America. The Broncos improved to 9-0 overall, while Clemson falls to 3-4-2 this season.

Clemson scored first at the 66:06 mark. Tiger goalkeeper Josh Campbell punted the ball down the field. Fabio Tambosi ran under the ball and sent a shot 16 yards out into the right corner of the goal. This was his third goal of the season.

Santa Clara tied the score 1-1 at the 86:02 mark. Anthony Chimienti scored his ninth goal of the season with assists by Eric Denton and Keith Burden.

The Broncos scored the game-winner with 10 seconds remaining in regulation (89:50). Keith Burden scored with assists by Shawn Percell and Chimienti. Burden headed the ball past Tiger goalkeeper Josh Campbell from six yards out.

Furman and Santa Clara will play for the championship on Sunday, October 3 at 12:30 p.m. Clemson and Akron will play at 3:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon in the last match of the tournament.
