Men’s Golf Seventh After Two Rounds in San Juan

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico–Senior Joey Maxon is tied for fourth after two rounds of the Puerto Rico Golf Classic at the Rio Mar River Course in San Juan. Maxon had rounds of 69 and 72 on Monday and trails only Matt Kuchar of Georgia Tech, Wilfredo Morales of Columbus and Tim Clark of NC State.

Maxon is the only Clemson player in the top 34 heading into the final round on Tuesday, a reason Clemson is seventh in the 15-team field, 20 shots behind leading NC State. The Pack shot 576 for the 36 holes, even par as a team.

Clemson had rounds of 297 and 299 on Monday. Georgia Tech is tied for second at 582 with Columbus, while North Carolina is fourth at 586. Wake Forest is fifth at 594 and Minnesota is sixth at 595. South Carolina is 13th at 609.

Freshman John Engler is Clemson’s second best golfer with a 152 after rounds of 75 and 77 and stands 34th. Defending NCAA Champion Charles Warren had rounds of 79 and 74. It was the first two rounds of golf in two weeks for Warren, who has been sidelined by the flu.

Chad Starliper, another senior in the starting lineup, had rounds of 78 and 76 and ranks 44th. Defending tournament champion Jonathan Byrd rounds out the lineup for Clemson with a 155, rounds of 75 and 80.
