Men’s Golf Holds First Round Lead at Carpet Capital Classic

April 3, 1998

DALTON, Ga. — Lucas Glover and Joey Maxon both shots 69s to lead fourth-ranked Clemson to a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Carpet Capital Classic in Dalton, GA. The Tigers had a team score of 285 on Friday, a stroke ahead of Houston.

Glover, who had a 68 in the opening round of the Clemson’s most recent Tournament, is ahead of the Clemson single season freshman stroke average (72.87). He did nothing to hurt his chances in the chase for that record with his round during difficult weather conditions.

Maxon, who has been Clemson’s most consistent player this spring, is tied for second with his Clemson teammate after one round. Matt Kuchar of Georgia Tech, the reigning US Amatuer Champion, is first with a 68.

The Tournament is comprised of 54 holes and will continue on Saturday. The first round was delayed five hours in starting due to wind and rain. The field is composed of 18 teams, including 11 ranked in the top 20 in the nation.

The top six teams are within seven shots of each other. After Clemson’s 285 and Houston’s 286 are Georgia Tech at 287, North Carolina at 290, Georgia at 291 and TCU at 292.

Jonathan Byrd supported Glover and Maxon with a 73, while freshman John Engler had a 74. Charles Warren shot an 83 and his score did not count toward the Clemson team total.
