Clemson, SC – Marche’ Strickland scored 27 points, while Deedee Warley added 18 points and 10 rebounds, leading Maryland to a 68-62 victory over 17th-ranked Clemson Thursday night at Littlejohn Coliseum. Maryland has now won five straight games and improved to 15-6 overall, 6-4 in the ACC. Clemson fell for the second straight game and is now 15-6 overall, 6-4 in the ACC.
The victory gave Maryland a sweep of the season series. They defeated Clemson in College Park on January 2, 85-73 in overtime. Clemson has now lost two straight after a four-game winning streak heading into a week off. The Lady Tigers played without starting forward Marci Glenney, who missed the game with a leg injury.
Clemson was led in scoring by Chrissy Floyd, who scored 18 points, but she had just three in the second half. Erin Batth had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, including nine off the offensive boards. Lakeia Stokes added 10 points, all in the second half.
Maryland shot 50 percent for the game and out-rebounded Clemson by a 41-28 margin. The Terps also made 18-23 free throws. Clemson stayed in the game by forcing turnovers, as the lady Tigers forced 22 and committed just 11. Clemson was 5-21 on three-point shots for the game, including 0-10 in the second half. Maryland coach Chris Weller had her team in a zone defense most of the night.
The contest was a game of streaks. Maryland held a 30-18 lead at the 6:13 mark of the first half after Strickland, who was 6-6 from the field in the first half, hit a three-point shot with just one second left on the shot clock. But, Clemson responded with a 14-0 run to end the half to take a 32-30 lead. Floyd scored 12 straight for the Tigers to tie the game, then Krystal Scott hit a shot with three seconds left to put Clemson in the lead. Clemson held Maryland scoreless over the last 6:13 of the half. Strickland had 17 points at intermission to lead Maryland, while Floyd had 15 to lead Clemson.
The streaks continued in the second half. Clemson held a 34-32 lead at the 18:09 mark when Maryland went on a 13-0 run. Warley was the key to the run, hitting five field goals, nearly all on shot shots from the baseline. Her banker made it 47-36 in favor of Maryland at the 12:45 mark of the second half.
But, Clemson responed with its own streak, an 11-0 run to tie the game at 47. Lakeia Stokes was important for Clemson in the stretch as she had a couple of baskets and made a steal that led to another. Her driving shot tied the score at 49 with 6:55 left.
But, Maryland had one more steak in them. They held a 62-60 lead with a minute left, then went on a 6-0 run to close out the Tigers. Strickland scored all six points in the stretch.
“We are excited with the win, anytime you win on the road in the ACC it is huge,” said Maryland Coach Chris Weller. “To beat one of the top teams in the country on the road is gratifying. We played a lot of zone, but did a good job on the boards, something that is tough to do from a zone defense. We went to the line more than they did and that was one of our goals for this game. We knew this game could put us in a tie for second in the ACC, that was a motivating factor. We are getting better.”
“Rebounding was key in the game, we need to improve in that area, it has been a problem for us the last few games,” said Clemson Coach Jim Davis. “We are not getting good leadership at this point. We need some people to step up at key times of the game, accept responsibility. “
Clemson’s next game is Sunday at home against NC State.
