COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Jason Garey scored two goals in leading 12th-ranked Maryland to a 2-0 win over Clemson in a men’s Atlantic Coast Conference soccer match at College Park, MD Sunday afternoon.
With the victory, Maryland moves to 12-4-1 and 3-2-1 in conference play, while Clemson drops to 8-7 on the year and 2-4 in the ACC. Garey’s two goals give him 16 on the season, the seventh most in Maryland school history.
The Terps got on the board by pressuring the Clemson defenders into a mistake. A soft pass back between defenders at the top of the Clemson box was taken away by A.J. Godbolt who quickly fed Garey. Garey fired the shot from 10 yards out for the score as Maryland took the 1-0 lead in the 18th minute.
Maryland pulled ahead 2-0 after Palmer sent a booming goal kick past the midfield stripe. Abe Thompson held off a Tiger defender to win the 50/50 ball, and headed it toward the Clemson goal. Garey beat his defender to the ball and buried a 12-yard shot in the lower right corner past Tiger keeper Hunter Gilstrap.
Clemson will play at Furman on Wednesday, November 3, at 7:00 p.m. in the Tigers’ next action.
