Lucas Glover Claims Five-Stroke Win in Puerto Rico

SAN JUAN, P.R. – Lucas Glover fired a 5-under-par 67 in the final round to claim a five-stroke victory at the Puerto Rico Classic at the Westin Rio Mar Resort and Country Club on Tuesday.

Glover shot scores of 68 and 70 in the first two rounds and his 67 on Tuesday equaled the lowest round of the tournament. He finished the 54-hole tournament with a score of 205, 11-under par. Minnesota’s Wilhelm Schauman finsihed second with a 210.

It was the first victory for the Clemson senior since he won the Mauna Kea Invitational in November of 1998 and it was his third overall victory at Clemson. He won the Carpet Capital in April of that year.

As a team, the Tigers finished in second place, just one stroke behind Georgia Tech, which won the team championship with a score of 861, 3-under par. Clemson finished the event with 862 strokes. Georgia and Georgia Tech held a one-stroke advantage ahead of Clemson after two rounds, but the Yellow Jackets and Tigers both had rounds of 282 on Tuesday. Minnesota finished third with an 865 while Georgia slipped to fourth with an 869.

Clemson’s John Engler finished tied for fifth with an even-par 216 and D.J. Trahan finished in a tie for 15th with a 3-over-par 219. Gregg Jones tied for 45th win a 227 and Jani Saari tied for 59th with a 231.

Clemson next competes in the Schenkel Invitational in Statesboro, GA March 9-11.
