Legendary Soccer Coach Honored Before Clemson-USC Game

Sept. 3, 2003

The following was read before the Clemson-South Carolina women’s soccer match on August 29, 2003.

“One of the most influential coaches in our country lost a two year battle with cancer last week. Please stand and join as we pause for a moment of silence, in honor and memory of Clive Charles. The Head Coach at the University of Portland and the United States Olympic team was a great ambassador for the game of soccer at all levels for both men and women. Fittingly, the last game he coached saw his Portland Women’s team win the NCAA National Championship last fall. Clive Charles was an inspiration to players, coaches, and educators alike. Although his legacy will live on, we will miss him dearly.”
