CHARLOTTE, NC – The Lady Tiger soccer team suffered its first loss of the 2007 season on Sunday afternoon falling to UNC-Charlotte by a score of 3-1 at the Carolina’s Cup in Charlotte, NC. With the loss, Clemson falls to 5-1 on the season, while the 49ers even their record at 3-3.
Clemson finished the Carolina’s Cup in third place with a 1-1 record. Junior defender Molly Johnson and sophomore midfielder Molly Franklin were named to the all-tournament team for the Lady Tigers.
Clemson took eight shots in the match, while UNC-Charlotte took 13 and the Lady Tigers had five corner kicks to the 49ers’ four. Clemson starting goalkeeper Ashley Phillips recorded four saves and did not allow a goal in 48 minutes of play. Phillips suffered an injury that required stitches to her knee and was replaced by freshman Paula Pritzen three minutes into the second half. Pritzen made three saves in the final 42 minutes of the game.
Clemson and UNC-Charlotte played scoreless soccer through the first 70 minutes of the match, but then the 49ers put three goals on the board in the next 12 minutes. Whitney Weinraub netted the 49ers’ first goal at the 70:47 mark and was assisted by Lindsey Ozimek. UNC-Charlotte’s second goal was scored in the 76th minute by Rachel Mees with assists by Sam Huecker and Danielle Mayeaux. At the 82:40 mark, Ozimek was unassisted in scoring the 49ers’ third goal of the match.
Midfielder Elizabeth Jobe put the Lady Tigers on the board with 88:08 on the clock. It was Jobe’s first goal of the season and the seventh of her career. The senior from Roswell, GA was unassisted on the play.
“This game was an aberration,” said Head Coach Todd Bramble. “We just have to make sure that this one loss does not cause another and turn into more losses for us. We are looking forward to returning home and playing a good match against South Carolina on Friday.”
The #17 Lady Tigers will play host to 13th-ranked South Carolina on Friday, September 21 at 7:30 p.m. The match between the in-state rivals will be the second in a double-header to be held at Riggs Field on Friday evening. The Tiger men’s team will face top-ranked Wake Forest on Friday at 5:00 p.m. prior to the meeting between the Lady Tigers and the Gamecocks.
