Koroleva, Gumulya Earn Preseason ITA Rankings; Earn Invite to All-American

CLEMSON, SC – Clemson junior women’s tennis players Yana Koroleva and Beatrice Gumulya have earned singles and doubles rankings in the preseason ITA Poll, heading into the fall. Koroleva, who advanced to the NCAA Singles Quarterfinals a season ago is No. 7 in the nation, while Gumulya, who advanced to the second round, checks in at No. 34. Jessy Rompies is ranked as the 9th-best newcomer going into the season.  All three players have earned spots in the 2013 ITA All-American Championships at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, CA. Koroleva earned a main draw spot, Gumulya a spot in the Qualifying tournament, and Rompies a spot in the Pre-Qualifying tournament.  The All-American is regarded as one of collegiate tennis’ “Grand Slam” events, and features the top players nationally. Gumulya and Koroleva also earned one of 16 bids in the main doubles draw.  As a doubles team, the pair are ranked 13th in the nation after compiling a 10-1 record together a season ago, which included wins over the No. 1 and No. 12 teams in the nation in the NCAA Team Tournament.  Koroleva earned a 28-8 singles record last year on her way to All-America honors, and had 19 wins against ranked players, including an upset of the No. 5 player in the nation on her run to the quarters. She is the first Clemson player to crack the top ten since Josipa Bek was ranked 8th in the 2011 Preseason Poll.  Gumulya was a team-best 26-6 on the season, advancing to the NCAA 2nd Round.  As a team, Clemson went to the Round of 16 without a junior or senior on the roster. Koroleva and Gumulya were each named All-ACC, and Koroleva was named the ACC Women’s Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year.  Rompies enrolled at Clemson in 2012 and sat out the 2012-13 season. She will be able to play for Clemson when the Tigers open up their fall schedule.
