CHAPEL HILL, NC – Clemson juniors Josipa Bek and Keri Wong have advanced to the Finals of the ITA Carolina Regional Tennis Championships in Chapel Hill, NC. Bek and Wong advanced to the doubles finals, while Bek is a singles finalist as well.
“I am looking forward to some great tennis from our Tigers tomorrow. I am very proud of their play here at the Carolina Regional Tournament thus far,” said Head Coach Nancy Harris.
It was a big effort for Bek, the two-time defending region singles champion and nation’s 13th-ranked player. She won two straight-set singles matches against #34 Martina Pavelec of Wake Forest and #24 Nadine Fahoum of Duke to advance to the finals. She then teamed with Wong to defeat Hannah Mar and Reka Zsilinzska of Duke, 8-2.
“Josipa and Keri played a solid match against Duke in the doubles working together to defeat one of Duke’s top teams, and then Josipa played one of the best matches I have seen her play this fall to advance to the singles finals.”
Bek has won the region each of the last two seasons in singles, and will play in her second straight doubles final. Last season, she was paired with Ina Hadziselimovic, but fell in the finals to #5 Sanaz Marand and Sophie Grabinski of North Carolina.
It was the second straight season that Bek knocked out Zsilinszka in the doubles semifinals. Bek and Zsilinszka also met in the singles finals a season ago. This year, however, Bek will take on North Carolina’s Zoe DeBruycker in the singles final, who has had a breakout tournament.
Bek and Wong will take on Shinnan Featherston and McHale from the home-team Tar Heels at 9:00 am Monday. Once that match is complete, Bek and Wong will play in the doubles final.
The Clemson tandem are ranked #5 nationally and are the top overall seed in the tournament. They advanced to the finals of the Riveria All-American Championships earlier in the month, and are considered serious contenders for the National Championship.
The winners of the regional will go on the play in the ITA National Indoor Championships in Flushing, NY, from Nov. 5-8. It features the winner of each of the 16 regionals in what is considered a collegiate Grand Slam event.
