Clemson, SC – Clemson senior Gregg Jones stands in fourth place, four shots back heading into the final round of the Northeast Amateur at Wannamoisset Golf Club in Rumsford, RI. Jones fired a one-over-par 70 on Saturday after rounds of 70 and 67 to open the tournament.
Jones, who has been a member of three Clemson golf teams that have finished first, second or third in his three years with the program, had five bogeys and four birdies during difficult conditions on Saturday on the unusual par 69 course. He trails Jason Hartwick and Chris Nallen, who are tied for the 54-hole lead with scores of 203. Hartwick is a member of the Texas golf team, while Nallen plays at Arizona. Luke Hickmott is third at 205.
Jones will attempt to become the third different Clemson golfer to win a major amateur event in the last three weeks when he tees it up on Sunday. Matt Hendrix won the Sunnehanna Amateur two weeks ago, and Brent Delahoussaye won the Monroe Invitational last weekend.
Both Hendrix and Delahoussaye are playing at the Northeast Amateur, but both don’t appear to have a chance at victory on Sunday. Hendrix had a 72 on Saturday and stands in 14th place at 211, four over par. Delahoussaye is 66th in the field of 80 golfers with a 54-hole score of 221.
