CLEMSON, S.C. — Jeff Watkinson has been named strength training director for basketball, Clemson Athletic Director Bobby Robinson announced Monday. Watkinson will supervise the strength training activities for both the men’s and women’s basketball programs at Clemson.
Watkinson comes to Clemson from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He served as the head strength and conditioning coach for all 14 of the 49ers sports the last two years. His area of concentration was with the 49ers basketball team that advanced to the NCAA Tournament under for Clemson assistant Bobby Lutz. Previous to that tenure, he was the assistant director of sports performance at the College of Charleston for the 1996-97 academic year.
Watkinson also has experience as a an assistant strength coach for the New York Knicks and with the Oakland A’s. A 1993 graduate of NC State, Watkinson was the captain of the Wolfpack baseball team that was ranked as high as #2 in the nation at one point in 1993. He earned his undergraduate degree from NC State in Pre-Medicine. In 1996 he earned a master’s degree in exercise science from Indiana University. He has also completed a year of work towards a doctorate in human performance.
