Golf To Compete in Puerto Rico Classic

Feb. 20, 2004

The Clemson Golf Team travels to Puerto Rico this weekend for the 2004 Puerto Rico Classic. Purdue will play host to the three-day 54-hole event at The River Course at Westin Rio Mar Country Club that will take place Feb. 22-24.

This year’s field includes six teams ranked in the top 10 in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings. The number one ranked Florida Gators and number two ranked Tigers will look to battle it out for 2004 Championship. The Oklahoma State Cowboys are the defending Champions at this year’s event.

Clemson will look to better its second place finish a year ago at the event with a much needed victory. Clemson is coming off a fourth place finish last week at the Mercedes-Benz Intercollegiate in Ponte-Vedra Florida. Clemson has finished in the Top four of every event this year and 23 in a row over the past three years.

The River Course at Westin Rio Mar Country Club is a 6,945-yard par 72 layout. The River Course is very demanding from tee-to-green and will offer a great test for the college teams participating in this year’s event. If the wind blows hard like it potentially can, the course will play extremely difficult.

Seniors, Matt Hendrix and Gregg Jones will lead the Tigers at this year’s Puerto Rico Classic. Junior Jack Ferguson will round off this trio of returning All-Americans for the Tiger Golf Team. Hendrix finished 34th in last week’s tournament and is currently ranked 21st in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings. Jones is coming off a third place showing and is ranked 12th in the Sagarin rankings. Ferguson finished 14th in the Mercedes-Benz Intercollegiate and is Currently ranked 23rd.

Junior Brent Dealahoussaye and Sophomore Brian Duncan will complete the five-man team this weekend. This will be the first time the two have competed in the Puerto Rico Classic. Delahoussaye currently has a 73.71 stroke average with 67 being his low round of the year. Brian Duncan has a 75.36 stroke average for the year.

First round action gets under-way Sunday, February 22 at 7:00 a.m. EST.
