Glover Named to United States President’s Cup Team

Sept. 8, 2009

Clemson, SC – Former Clemson All-American and 2009 US Open Champion Lucas Glover has been selected by United States Captain Fred Couples to represent the United States in the 2009 President’s Cup. The tournament will be held at Harding Park Golf Club in San Francisco October 8-11.

This will be the second straight President’s Cup appearance for Glover, who is the only former Tiger to be selected to a United States national golf team at the professional level. He helped the US team to a team victory in 2007.

Glover was 11th in the final regular season President’s Cup points standing, meaning he was one of two captain’s picks for Couples. He was in the exact same situation in 2007, as the number-11 ranked player when Jack Nicklaus made Glover a captain’s pick.

Glover was joined on the team as a captain’s pick by former Oklahoma State All-American Hunter Mahan, who was also a captain’s pick with Glover in 2007.

The other 10 players on the United States team are Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Steve Stricker, Kenny Perry, Zach Johnson, Stewart Cink, Sean O’Hair, Jim Furyk, Anthony Kim and Justin Leonard.

Glover has had his finest year on the PGA Tour. He became the first former Tiger to win a Major when he captured the US Open at Bethpage Black in June. He also finished fifth at the PGA Championship, the highest finish ever by a former Tiger in that event as well. He is seventh on the PGA Tour money list with over $3.4 million and is 14th in the Fed X Cup point standings entering this weekend’s play at Cog Hill Country Club in Chicago.

Glover is first on the PGA Tour in total driving and is first in total birdies.
