Fourth-Ranked Men’s Soccer Edges Winthrop

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Wojtek Krakowiak had a goal and an assist within the first nine minutes of play, and Clemson went on to a 2-1 victory over Winthrop in Rock Hill Wednesday evening.

Clemson, ranked fourth in the latest Soccer America poll, and fifth in the NCAA Coach’s poll, will play host to Virginia, ranked 10th and seventh, respectively, this Sunday at 2:00 PM at Riggs Field. Winthrop fell to 9-6 for the season.

John Wilson scored the opening goal, just 5:11 in when he took a pass from Krakowiak. Clemson scored again just four minutes later when Scott Bower fed Krakowiak for the goal.

It was the 15th goal of the season for Krakowiak and the 11th assist for Bower. They lead Clemson in each category, respectively.

Winthrop outshot Clemson in the second half, 7-2 and scored at the 76:01 mark on a goal by Darryl Gomez. He was assisted by Paul Hayward. Winthrop had a chance to tie the game from 30 yards out with 3:11 left on a shot by Gareth Hayden, but Clemson keeper Josh Campbell made the save. Campbell had three saves on the night. Winthrop outshot Clemson for the evening 10-9.
