Four Clemson Women’s Tennis Players Advance In ITA Southeast Regional

CHAPEL HILL, NC – In day two action at the ITA Southeast Regional, four Tiger women’s tennis players advanced to Saturday’s round of 32 in the singles main draw. Clemson’s doubles team of Daniela Alvarez and Federica van Adrichem also reached the round of 16 in the doubles bracket. The Tigers’ Maria Brito remained undefeated in the 2005 fall season, winning her eighth straight match in singles competition. Saturday’s competition will begin at 8:30 AM at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on the campus of the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.

Van Adrichem rolled over North Carolina’s Hanes Harris in her opening round match by a score of 6-0, 6-1. She will face Melissa Schaub of Tennessee on Saturday in the round of 32. Clemson’s Carol Salge defeated East Tennessee State’s Sandie Knight, 6-0, 6-2, in the first round. Her round of 32 match against Jenny Zika of Duke will begin at 10:00 AM. Brito claimed a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Ofra Friedman of Charlotte, and will meet Tennessee’s Ghizella Schutte on Saturday.

Alvarez also advanced in singles competition after dropping the first set to Tennessee’s Bryce Marable, 5-7. She won the second and third sets, 7-6 and 6-2 respectively, for the victory. She will face Jenna Loeb of Wake Forest in the round of 32. Clemson’s Kathi Gerber fell in her round of 64 contest to 108th-ranked Jenna Long of North Carolina and will face Ashley Murray of Charlotte in the consolation round of 32.

In doubles action, Alvarez and van Adrichem defeated Charlotte’s team of Murray and Ali Piacente, 8-1, to reach the round of 16. The Tiger team will face Ashlee Davis and Alexandra Hirsch of Wake Forest at 8:30 AM on Saturday.
