Former Clemson All-ACC Golfer Qualifies for Wyndham Championship

Aug. 12, 2008

Clemson, SC — Former Clemson All-American Stephen Poole was the top qualifier in Monday competition for the 2008 Wyndham Championship. Poole shot a six under par 65 at the Carlson Farm Course at Greensboro Country Club to finish first in a field of 60 professionals.

Poole started strong with birdies on holes 1, 3 and 5. He made a 35-foot birdie putt on the third hole that gave him great confidence. He finished strong with birdies on 14, 15, and 16 to reach six under par. Four of the 60 golfers gained spots in the final PGA Tour event of the regular season. The FedX Cup Playoffs begin the following week in New York.

The native of Spartanburg, SC will play in his first career PGA Tour event this weekend at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro. He did qualify for a Nationwide Tour event earlier this year and finished 44th in the event held in Raleigh, NC.

Poole was one of the leaders on Clemson’s 2006 golf team that finished seventh in the nation. He was also a member of the 2004 ACC Championship team.
