Ferguson Fires 74 in Opening Round of US Amateur

Aug. 16, 2004

Clemson, SC – Jack Ferguson shot an opening round 74 and Martin Catalioto shot an 80 during the first day of competition at the 104th United States Amateur. The event is being played on the East and West Courses at Winged Foot Country Club in Mamaroneck, NY. The second and final round of stroke play for the 312 golfers concludes Tuesday. The top 64 golfers will move on to the match play portion of the championship.

The winner and runner-up will qualify for the 2005 Masters.

Ferguson stands in 51st position after his opening 74. The Clemson senior had a one-under-par 34 on the front side on the West Course, regarded as the more difficult of the two courses. He then slumped to a 40 on the back in recording his four over par 74. Ferguson was five over par between holes 11-15 before he finished with three straight pars.

Catalioto, who also qualified for the United States Public Links championship this year, had nine hole scores of 43-37 in recording his 80 on the West Course. He stands in 214th position after the first round. A pair of double bogeys on the front side hurt Catalioto’s chances.
