PACIFIC PALISADES, CA – Clemson’s Julie Coin earned a first-round victory at the 2004 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships on Thursday to advance to the a second-round match against UNLV’s Elena Gantcheva on Friday. The fourth-seeded Coin defeated 15th-ranked Megan Muth of William & Mary by a score of 6-2, 6-2 to capture her first-round win.
In doubles action for the Tigers, Maria Brito and Daniela Alvarez fell to Florida’s 12th-ranked team of Jennifer Magley and Zerene Reyes, 8-6, in their first-round match. Clemson’s top team, ranked 21st nationally, is set to face William & Mary’s Megan Muth and Amy Wei in the quarterfinals of the consolation draw on Friday. Muth and Wei were the tournament’s second seed, but suffered an 8-6 upset by Texas’ 19th-ranked duo of Katie Ruckert and Kendra Strohm.
