Feb. 27, 2006

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Clemson’s Carol Salge and Miami’s Audra Cohen both helped their respective squads to upsets on the week, and share Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Tennis Performer of the Week honors.

Salge picked up wins in singles and doubles as the 26th-ranked Tigers toppled No. 18 Georgia in Athens on Wednesday, 4-3. Salge teamed with Federica van Adrichem at No. 1 doubles to upset the No. 9 doubles tandem in the country, Caroline Basu and Shadisha Robinson, 8-5.

Salge, a sophomore from San Roque, Brazil, also picked up a win at No. 4 singles, topping Basu, 6-3, 6-4, to clinch the match.

The win was Clemson’s first over Georgia since 1996, and the first on Georgia’s home courts since the 1984 season.

Cohen helped the Hurricanes post two wins over ranked opponents on the week. In Miami’s 5-2 win over No. 30 Kentucky on Thursday, Cohen turned in a 6-1, 6-0 victory over the Wildcats’ Kim Coventry, who is ranked 22nd in the nation. Cohen also teamed with Melissa Applebaum to take down Coventry and Carolina Escamilla in doubles action, 8-4.

Against No. 3 Texas on Sunday, Cohen, the 13th-ranked singles player in the nation, defeated No. 51 Petra Dizdar, 7-6, 6-2. Cohen and Applebaum, who form the No. 22 doubles duo in the nation, topped Mia Marovic and Kendra Strohm, 8-4, as Miami picked up the 4-3 win.

Clemson returns to the courts on Wednesday, March 1, against Georgia Tech, while Miami next takes on Florida State in Tallahassee, Fla., on Friday, March 3.
