Clemson Women’s Tennis Team Upsets Virginia 5-2 On Sunday

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – The 25th-ranked Clemson women’s tennis team upset #21 Virginia on Sunday by a score of 5-2. With the win, the Tigers improve to 14-3 overall and 4-0 in the ACC, while Virginia falls to 11-6 and 1-2 in conference play.

Clemson swept all three doubles matches to pick up the doubles point. At flight one doubles, Clemson’s 31st-ranked team of Julie Coin and Laurence Jayet defeated #38 Henrietta Williams and Julie Tuchband by a score of 8-5. Clemson’s number two duo of Alix Lacelarie and Daniela Alvarez, currently ranked tied for 59th, upset Virginia’s 42nd-ranked Lori Stern and Kristen James, 8-4. At flight three, the Tigers’ Anna Dolinska and Ioana Paun defeated Kyle Montgomery and Lauren Bruch 8-6.

In singles action, 21st-ranked Julie Coin of Clemson defeated #64 Williams by a score of 6-3, 6-3 at flight one. The Tigers’ Lacelarie lost a 6-3, 7-5 decision at flight two singles to #74 Tuchband. Alvarez dropped a three-set decision, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, to the Cavaliers’ James at number three singles, while the Tigers’ Laurence Jayet won a hard-fought 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 decision over Marta Bechliwanis at flight four. Clemson’s Ioana Paun was victorious over Dora Bechliwanis at number five singles by a score of 6-2, 6-2, while the Tigers’ Ana Stiglic won a 4-6, 6-2, 10-3 decision over Bruch at flight six.

Clemson will return to action on Apr. 3 as the Tigers play host to ACC rival Georgia Tech.
