Feb. 15, 2003

CLEMSON, SC – The 27th-ranked Clemson women’s tennis team upset #18 South Carolina on Saturday afternoon at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center in Clemson. The win is the first for the Tigers against the Gamecocks since 1996, when Clemson won a 5-4 decision against South Carolina in the NCAA Southeast Regional in Columbia. Clemson’s last win over the Gamecocks in a dual match was in 1993, when the Tigers defeated the Gamecocks 8-1 in Clemson. With the win, the Tigers improve to 5-1 on the season, while South Carolina falls to 2-1.

“We’re thrilled to get such a wonderful win over a great team. We have a lot of respect for their coaches and program,” said head coach Nancy Harris. “We were fortunate to win today. The girls were fired up before the match. They had lots of desire and went out on the court and executed. It was a great confidence builder for the team because we won so solidly. I’m extremely proud of our girls and staff.”

In doubles play, the Tigers’ 42nd-ranked team of Julie Coin and Laurence Jayet won an 8-4 decision over South Carolina’s Kathy Boyanovich and Magda Wojdylo at flight one. At number two doubles, Clemson’s Daniela Alvarez and Alix Lacelarie defeated the Gamecocks’ Catherine Brown and Jodi Kenoyer, 8-2. Richele LeSaldo and Ana Stiglic of Clemson took an 8-2 victory over South Carolina’s Justine Walsh and Danielle Wiggins at flight three.

In singles action, #23 Coin defeated #93 Boyanovich 6-3, 6-1 at flight one. At number two singles, Lacelarie won a 6-4, 6-3 decision over Kenoyer.
