Clemson Women’s Tennis Team Ranked 31st in ITA Preseason Poll

CLEMSON, SC – The Clemson women’s tennis team is ranked 31st in the Omni Hotels Collegiate Tennis preseason poll released by the ITA on Jan. 13. Julie Coin is ranked 23rd by the ITA in the preseason singles poll, while the Tigers’ doubles team of Coin and Laurence Jayet is ranked 42nd in the doubles poll.

The Tigers completed the 2002 spring season with a 14-11 overall record and a 5-3 mark in the ACC. Clemson reached the second round of the 2002 NCAA Women’s Tennis Championship, defeating #16 William & Mary before falling to #8 Wake Forest. The Tigers return eight letterwinners from last year’s squad for the 2003 season.

Julie Coin, a sophomore from Amiens, France, is ranked 23rd in the ITA’s preseason singles poll. Coin posted a 12-2 record during the fall season, recording wins over two top-10 ranked players. She was the 2002 Omni Hotels/ITA Southeast Region champion, and advanced to the second round of the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships. Coin was the flight one singles champion at the Furman Fall Classic and the runner-up in the flight one singles draw at the Clemson Fall Invitational.

Clemson’s doubles team of Coin and senior Laurence Jayet was ranked 42nd by the ITA in the preseason doubles rankings. The pair was 7-2 overall during the fall season. Coin and Jayet won the flight one doubles championship at the Clemson Fall Invitational and reached the quarterfinals of the ITA Southeast Regional doubles championship before falling to the tournament’s third seed.

The Tigers will open the spring season against College of Charleston on Sunday, Jan. 26. The match will be held at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center on Clemson’s campus and is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m.
