Feb. 19, 2003

CLEMSON, SC – The Clemson women’s tennis team is ranked 21st according to the ITA poll released on Feb. 19. The Tigers improve from a ranking of 27th in last week’s poll after defeating UNC Greensboro 7-0 and upsetting then-#18 South Carolina 6-1 last weekend. The Tigers (5-1) will play host to Middle Tennessee on Friday and sixth-ranked Georgia on Sunday. Friday’s match is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m., while Clemson will take on the Bulldogs on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Both matches will be played at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center on Clemson’s campus.

Clemson is 0-2 in matches against Middle Tennessee. Last season the Tigers dropped a 4-3 decision to the Blue Raiders in Clemson. Middle Tennessee is 2-7 overall, defeating Mississippi State, but falling to Georgia Tech last weekend.

The Tigers hold a 19-14 all-time advantage over Georgia, however the Bulldogs have won the previous six matches in the series. Clemson’s last win was in 1996, when the Tigers won a 5-4 decision over then-#18 Georgia at the NCAA Southeast Regional in Columbia, SC. The Tigers’ last win in a dual match was a 6-3 victory at the USC Invitational in 1986. Last season, Clemson dropped a 6-1 decision to then-first-ranked Georgia in Athens. The Bulldogs are 4-1 on the season, most recently defeating #9 UCLA and #28 Wake Forest, and falling to #7 Southern Cal at the USTA/ITA National Team Indoors in Madison, WI.
