CLEMSON, SC – The Clemson women’s tennis team is ranked 15th according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll released on January 27. The ranking is the highest for a Tiger women’s tennis team since the 1996 season, when the team was ranked as high as 14th nationally. Clemson is scheduled to open the 2004 season at home against College of Charleston on Saturday.
The Tigers improve to 15th nationally after being ranked 16th as a team in the ITA’s preseason poll released on January 13. Clemson finished the 2003 season with a 19-6 overall record, a 7-1 mark in the Atlantic Coast Conference and a ranking of 19th in the final ITA poll. In the preseason rankings, three Tiger singles players and three doubles teams were ranked in the individual singles and doubles poll.
Julie Coin was ranked ninth by the ITA in singles, while Daniela Alvarez and Maria Brito were ranked 40th and 79th, respectively, for Clemson. In doubles, the Tigers’ Brito and Coin were ranked 12th in the ITA poll, while Alvarez and Alix Lacelarie were 16th. Clemson’s duo of Richele LeSaldo and Karen Rombouts ranked in a tie for 50th in the ITA doubles poll.
