MOBILE, AL – The 11th-ranked Clemson women’s tennis team won a 5-2 decision over #36 South Alabama on Sunday afternoon in Mobile. With the win, the Tigers improve to 6-1 on the season, while the Jaguars fall to 5-4.
In doubles action, the Tigers’ 30th-ranked team of Daniela Alvarez and Alix Lacelarie defeated Katarina Palenikova and Catherine Perkins by a score of 8-4 at flight one. At number two doubles, sixth-ranked Maria Brito and Julie Coin won an 8-1 decision over South Alabama’s Marlieke Jager and Klara Jarova. Clemson’s team of Richele LeSaldo and Karen Rombouts were victorious at flight three doubles, defeating Dominika Nemcovicova and Ana Rupic by a score of 8-3.
In singles play, eighth-ranked Coin defeated Palenikova by a score of 6-2, 6-3 at flight one, while Rombouts won a three-set decision (6-2, 4-6, 6-3) over Jager at flight two. Alvarez (#51) was victorious at flight three singles, posting a 6-2, 7-6 win over Nemcovicova. At four singles, Brito defeated Perkins by a score of 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. LeSaldo lost a three-set decision (3-6, 6-2, 6-4) to Jarova at flight five, while the Tigers’ Silvia Gutierrez fell to Rupic by a score of 6-1, 7-6 at number six singles.
Clemson will return to action on Wednesday, March 3 as they travel to Athens to take on Georgia. The Bulldogs are currently ranked in a tie for second in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll.
