NASHVILLE, TN – The Clemson women’s tennis team competed at the June Stewart Invitational held last weekend at Vanderbilt. Anna Savitskaya, Laurence Jayet and Richele LeSaldo finished second in their respective flights to lead the Tigers.
In flight one singles, freshman Alix Lacelarie (Villeneuve-des-Beizieres, France) defeated Purdue’s Gretchen Haynor in three sets (4-6, 6-4, 6-0) to advance to the semifinals. Lacelarie was defeated 7-6, 6-4 by Manon Kruse (MTSU), but finished third in the flight with a 6-1, 6-3, win over Kentucky’s Carolina Mayorga.
Milena Stanoycheva also won her first round match over Penn State’s Kristen Nowicki, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. She lost her second round match to Vanderbilt’s Kelly Schmandt 6-0, 4-6, 6-1, and was defeated 6-1, 7-6 by Vanderbilt’s Kate Burson to finish fourth in the flight.
Ana Stiglic won her first round match 7-5, 7-6 over Penn State’s Maaria Husain in the flight three draw. Vanderbilt’s Katie Blaszak defeated Stiglic in three sets (4-6, 6-0, 6-3) in the semifinals, and Stiglic dropped a 6-3, 6-1 match to Middle Tennessee State’s Carien Venter 6-3, 6-1 to finish fourth in the flight.
In flight four singles, Anna Savitskaya defeated Marshall’s Alice sukner 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 in the first round. Savitskaya recorded another three-set win over Purdue’s Laura Burgarello 6-2, 7-6, 6-3, in the semifinals. Penn State’s Janelle Perez defeated Savitskaya 6-1, 6-4 in the finals.
Laurence Jayet won her first round match 6-3, 6-1, over Alabama-Birmingham’s Femke de Boer. She also won her semifinal match, 6-1, 6-2 over Vanderbilt’s Kori Scott before dropping a 6-2, 6-3 finals match to Vanderbilt’s Annie Menees.
In flight six singles, Sunnie Harmon lost a 6-4, 6-0, first-round match to Tennessee’s Ashley Robards. In the consolation semifinals, Harmon was defeated 6-1, 6-2 by Purdue’s Missy Wright. Harmon claimed seventh-place with a 6-0, 7-5 win over Alabama-Birmingham’s Sjouke Liam.
Anna Dolinska lost her first round match in the flight seven singles, 6-4, 6-2, to Penn State’s Leigh Ann Merryman. Dolinska defeated Purdue’s Catie McLevish 6-3, 6-2 in the consolation semifinals, and then won the consolation finals 6-0, 6-2 over Middle Tennessee State’s Michaela Gridling, to claim fifth place.
Ashley Bowen and Richele LeSaldo competed in the flight eight singles draw. Bowen won her first round match 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, over Penn State’s Sarah Spence, before falling to Penn State’s Judy Wang 6-1, 6-0, in the semifinals. Bowen lost a 7-6, 6-1 match to Tennessee’s Breanna Kray to finish fourth in the flight. LeSaldo also won her first round match 6-0, 7-5 over Middle Tennessee State’s Emily Vest. She defeated Tennessee’s Breanna Kray 6-2, 6-4, in the semifinals before falling to Penn State’s Judy Wang in three sets) 3-6, 6-2, 6-1) in the finals.
In flight one doubles action, Lacelarie and Jayet won their first round match 9-8 over Penn state’s Ho and Nowicki , then lost 8-2 to Kentucky’s Mayorga and Witten in the semifinals. Lacelarie and Jayet finished fourth after losing 8-4 to Purdue’s Haynor and Wright.
In flight two doubles, Savitskaya and Dolinska lost their first round match, 8-4, to Marshall’s Sukner and Kroh. Clemson’s duo was narrowly defeated, 9-8 in the consolation semifinals by Alabama-Birmingham’s Immele and Liem. Savitskaya and Dolinska claimed seventh place with an 8-4 win over Purdue’s Zuccarini and Walgenbach.
Stanoycheva and Stiglic defeated Marshall’s Skalsky and Hock, 9-7, in their first round match in flight three doubles. Purdue’s Igbal and Burgarello defeated Stanoycheva and Stiglic 8-2 in the semifinals, and Clemson lost 8-2 to Vanderbilt’s Scott and Menees to finish fourth.
In flight four doubles, Harmon and LeSaldo lost their first round match, 8-2, to Tennessee’s Immink and Kray. They received a bye in the consolation semifinals, then defeated Purdue and Tennessee’s McLevish and Robards 8-1 to finish fifth.
Clemson’s Bowen also played in the flight four doubles with Kentucky’s Collins. Collins and Bowen won their first round match 8-5, then lost 8-2 to Penn State’s Wang and Spence. Collins and Bowen finished fourth after losing their final match, 8-3, to Tennessee’s Immink and Kray.
