Clemson Women’s Soccer Team to Open Regular Season at Home on Friday

Clemson, SC – The Clemson women’s soccer team will open the regular season on Friday evening against Liberty. The Lady Tigers will play host to the Flames at 5:00 p.m. at Riggs Field. Friday’s match will be the first ever meeting between Clemson and Liberty.

Head Coach Todd Bramble’s team is ranked 19th according to the NSCAA preseason poll. The Lady Tigers won two exhibition matches during the 2007 preseason, defeating Davidson 1-0 on the road and Georgia 1-0 at home. Senior forward Nuria Zufia scored Clemson’s lone goal against Davidson and junior defender Molly Johnson netted the Lady Tiger goal versus the Bulldogs.

Clemson advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight for the fourth time in the program’s 13-year history in 2006 and finished the season with an 11-8-5 record overall and a 5-3-2 mark in the ACC. The Lady Tigers return nine of 11 starters from the 2006 squad, which finished the season ranked in a tie for 14th in the final NSCAA poll and was 15th according to the final Soccer Buzz rankings.

Liberty was 9-7-1 overall in 2006 but finished the season on a 6-1-1 run. The Flames advanced to the championship match of the 2006 Big South Tournament before falling to UNC-Asheville. Liberty returns seven starters from its 2006 roster.

Friday’s match is the first half of a double-header, and will be followed by the Tiger men’s soccer game against in-state rival South Carolina at 7:30 p.m.
