Clemson vs. Wake Forest Notes

This was Clemson’s third overtime game within the last sixgames, all in ACC games. The last time Clemson played threeovertime games within a six-game period was 1977-78 when Clemsonplayed overtime games with North Carolina, Wake Forest and Virginiabetween Jan. 4-21, 1978 nearly identical to the dates of thissix-game stretch (Jan. 6-22). Clemson played three overtime gameswithin a seven-game period in 2004-05, Oliver Purnell’s second yearat Clemson. That year Clemson played four overtime contests. Thisis the first year Clemson has won at least two overtime games sincethe 1996-97 season when Clemson beat Kentucky and Duke in overtimeon the way to a 23-10 season. Clemson trailed at the half 32-31then came back to win the game. It marked the third time this yearthat Clemson has trailed at the half then won the Each of Clemson’slast three wins over Wake Forest have come in overtime. The otherswere a 118-115 double overtime win at Clemson in 2001-02, a 74-73overtime win in 2005-06. Overall, Clemson and Wake Forest have nowplayed 13 overtime games in history. Wake Forest has a 8-5 lead,but Clemson has won three of the last four extra session games.Over the last four games with Wake Forest there have been threeovertime games and a game decided by two points, a contest that wasdecided on a putback with 3.4 seconds left by the Demon Deacons.Clemson guard Terrence Oglesby is now 6-6 on three-point shots inthe last two overtime games. He was 4-4 in the two overtimesagainst Florida State and was 2-2 this evening. Sam Perry had hisfirst double figure scoring game of the year and his first since hehad 10 points in a win over Georgia at Clemson last year. It wasthe first time he scored in double figures in an ACC game since hescored 10 at Virginia Tech his sophomore year (2005-06). Overall itwas just the 11th double figure scoring game of his 113-gamecareer, his fourth against an ACC opponent. K.C. Rivers had histhird double figure rebounding game this season and his thirddouble-double. Rivers had 11 rebounds and 19 points this eveningand added a career high tying five steals. Rivers now has fourcareer double-doubles. All four have come in his last 24 games.Clemson Hammonds had four steals this evening and now has 199 forhis career. When he gets his next steal he will become just thesixth player in ACC history with 1200 points, 400 rebounds, 400assists and 200 steals. Wake Forest had an 11-0 record when leadingwith five minutes left heading into this evening’s game. WakeForest led 62-54 with five minutes left this evening, but theTigers won he game, 80-75. Wake Forest had a 39-28 lead in reboundswith six minutes left in regulation. Clemson out-rebounded WakeForest 13-3 over the last 11 minutes of the game (including theovertime). Clemson was 10-14 from the field in the two overtimesagainst Florida State and was 4-5 this evening. Thus, Clemson is14-19 from the field in its last three overtime periods. JeraiGrant did not play this evening due to a rib injury suffered duringthe Duke game. He may return for this weekend’s game at Miami (FL).Clemson is now 4-3 in the month of January and has just one gameleft in the month. If Clemson can gain victory at Miami (FL) onSunday it would give Clemson its first winning record in Januarysince the 1996-97 season when Clemson was 6-2. That is the onlyseason since 1990-91 that Clemson has had a winning record in themonth of January.
