ANDERSON, S.C. – The Clemson women’s tennis team swept its two matches on Sunday, upsetting No. 11 Wake Forest, 4-3, before topping the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, 6-1, at the AU Tennis Center in the Tigers’ 2018 home opener. With the two victories, Clemson moved to 5-3 on the season.
The Tigers got off to a quick start in their match against the Demon Deacons, taking the doubles point with wins at both No. 3 and No. 1 doubles. The No. 1 doubles matchup featured Marie-Alexandre Leduc and Fernanda Navarro taking down the nation’s No. 34 doubles duo in Anna Ulyashchenko and Eliza Omirou, 7-5.
The action was back and forth in the singles, and Wake Forest won two of the first three singles points at No. 5 and No. 1. Halfway through the singles competition, the two teams were knotted at 2-2, with Clemson’s first singles win coming courtesy of Daniela Ruiz at No. 6, 6-2, 6-3. The Demon Deacons took a 3-2 lead with a win at No. 3 singles, but the Tigers did not back down. While both Sydney Riley’s and Navarro’s matches at No. 2 and No. 4 singles, respectively, went to tiebreaks in the first set that ended in Wake Forest taking early leads, both Tigers came out victorious to seal the upset, with Navarro clinching it over the nation’s No. 80 singles player.
Against Chattanooga, Clemson again took early control of the match with the doubles point and kept it up throughout the singles competition. The Tigers won all of their singles matches except at No. 5, but the first set of that match went to a tiebreak, so Clemson fought across the board. Perhaps the highlight of the singles competition versus Chattanooga was Constanza Gorches’ 6-0, 6-0 defeat of Bogdana Zaporozhets at No. 6.
Clemson goes on the road to face Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va. on Saturday.
