Clemson Team Fires Record 279 in First Round in Oklahoma

Clemson, S.C.—Alice Hewson fired a five-under-par 66, while Sydney Legacy and Ana Paula Valdes shot even-par  scores of 71 to lead Clemson to a third-place team standing out of 12 teams after the first round of the Schooner Fall Classic in Norman, Okla.  The teams will play a second round on Saturday afternoon as inclement weather threatens to hit the area.

Clemson is in third-place with a five-under par 279 score after 18 holes.  Florida State was first at 14-under-par 270 and Alabama was second at 275.  The Tigers were four shots ahead of Notre Dame and six shots ahead of host school Oklahoma after the morning round.

Hewson had five birdies and 13 pars in recording the second lowest score in Clemson history.  The only individual round that is better is her 65 at the Cougar Classic last year.   She was tied for third-place after the third round individually.

Clemson’s team score of 279 was three shots better than the 282 the team shot at the Cougar Classic in 2013. That was the first round in Clemson history.  Clemson shot six-under-par in recording that 282 and that is still the best score vs. par for a Tiger team.

Valdes had three birdies and three bogeys in recording her even par 71 in her first career round.  Legacy had three birdies and three bogeys as well.  Junior Marisa Messana had a two over par 73 and Sloan Shanahan had a 78.
