GREENVILLE, S.C. — The Clemson women’s tennis team opened up their fall season on Friday at the Debbie Southern Furman Fall Classic, posting several victories over the course of the first day of competition. 13 teams in total competed at the tournament in Greenville, including six ACC schools.
In doubles play, the pair of Sophia Hatton and Alexandra Anttila secured a 7-5 victory, while the grouping of Makayla Mills and Lana Sipek won two matches, 6-2 and 6-1. They compete in the final match of Doubles Flight 6 today.
Singles competition saw Cristina Mayorova, Daniella Medvedeva, Ali Despain, Samantha Buyckx and Lana Sipek win their matches and advance to the second round, to be played later today. In total, five Tigers won their singles match on the opening day of competition.
“Overall, it was a great first day of competition for our team” said Head Coach Christy Lynch. “It’s great to see where we are at right now against some of the best schools in the nation. It was nice to see Ali (DeSpain) close out her match the way that she did, playing with a lot of conviction. We will look to continue to improve each day throughout the weekend!”
