Clemson Opens Play in NCAA National Tournament Friday

Clemson, S.C.—Larry Penley’s Clemson men’s golf team will begin play at the 2016 NCAA National Tournament in Eugene, Oregon on Friday, May 27.  The Tigers are seeded 10th in the 30-team field and will play with No. 11 California and No. 12 LSU in the first two rounds.  Clemson will begin play at 4:37 Eastern time on Friday at the first tee.

The 30 teams will play three rounds, Friday-Sunday at the par 70 Eugene Country Club Course that was designed by Robert Trent Jones in 1965.  After three rounds the field will be cut to the top 15 teams and six individuals. After four rounds the individual champion will be crowned and the top eight teams will advance to match play.  The quarterfinals and semifinals of match play will be completed on Tuesday and the National Championship match will be Wednesday, June 2.

“This will be a golf course that requires accurate drives and accurate shots to the green,” said Penley, who is taking his 26th Clemson team to the National Tournament.  “There are a lot of false fronts and areas where the ball will fall off the green.   None of our players have seen the course before so the practice round on Thursday will be very important as we chart each hole.”

Penley’s Tigers have had an outstanding spring and are playing their best golf heading into the national tournament.  This spring the Tigers have won three tournaments, the most wins in a season for the program since 2003-04.  That includes a victory at the ACC Tournament in April, the first conference championship for the program since 2004.

Clemson finished third at the NCAA Regional in Stillwater, Oklahoma May 16-18.   Only host school Oklahoma State, and nearby Oklahoma defeated the Tigers over the 54 holes and Clemson’s 292 score was the best of all 14 teams in the last round.  Stephen Behr was the top Tiger with an eighth place finish (222), while Austin Langdale was 15th and Miller Capps was 17th.

Overall, this is the 29th time Clemson has reached the NCAA National Tournament.  The program won the National Championship in 2003 at Stillwater, Okla, and has been the runner-up twice, 1998 and 2001.  Twelve times Clemson has finished in the top eight, the goal for this year’s team through the four rounds of stroke play.

This will be the Tigers third trip to Oregon this academic year.  The Tigers finished seventh out of 15 teams at the Nike Elite Invitational in the fall a Pumpkin Ridge, then won the Bandon Dunes Championship at Bandon Trails in March.
