Clemson Men’s Soccer Team to open 2006 season Friday night at South Carolina

CLEMSON, SC–The Clemson men’s soccer team will open its 2006 season at South Carolina in Columbia at 7:00 p.m.

Clemson is ranked fifth by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and sixth by Soccer America.

The Tigers advanced to the NCAA Final Four last season and finished the 2005 season with a 15-6-3 record. Clemson returns 13 letterwinners and seven starters from last year’s team.

This will be the 34th meeting between Clemson and South Carolina on the soccer field. Clemson leads the overall series 21-11-1. The Tigers are 9-1-1 in the last 11 matches between the two schools since the 1996 season. Tiger Head Coach Trevor Adair is 9-2-1 against the Gamecocks during his Clemson tenure.

Clemson will be led by seniors Dane Richards (Forward) and Phil Marfuggi (Goalkeeper). Richards was the Tigers’ leading scorer with 12 goals and eight points with 32 points in 2005. Marfuggi, a preseason All-American, had a 0.85 goal allowed average and 89 saves.
