Clemson in Second After 36 Holes of Jerry Pate Intercollegiate

CLEMSON, SC – Corbin Mills had rounds of 65 and 69 to lead Clemson to a 564 team score and second-place standing after two rounds of the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate in Birmingham, AL. The 12-team event that includes five of the top 20 teams in the nation is being played at the par 70 Old Overton Course.

Texas has the team lead by 15 shots entering the final round with a 549 score. The Longhorns had team rounds of 271-278 on Monday and they were the only team to have two team rounds under par.

Clemson is one-shot ahead of third-ranked Alabama, who stands in third place at 565. UAB is fourth at 575, UNLV is fifth at 576 and number-one ranked Auburn is in sixth place at 577. Clemson, ranked 12th in the nation, is the only ACC team in the field.

Mills shot a career best five under par 65 in the first round when he had seven birdies and two bogeys. He followed that up with a 69 in the second round. He finished the day with 11 birdies for the 36 holes, tied for first in the field with Jordan Spieth of Texas.

Mills and Spieth are tied for the lead at six-under-par 134 through two rounds. They will play together on Tuesday in the final round. Derek Ernst of UNLV and Dylan Frittelli of Texas are tied for third at 135.

Mills was supported by McCuen Elmore with rounds of 71-70. He stands in ninth place entering the final round. The senior had nine birdies in the two rounds combined, fifth best in the field of 60 players.

Clemson’s third best player on Monday was sophomore Thomas Bradshaw, who had rounds of 69 and 76. He stands at 145 after 36 holes, tied for 21st. Jacob Burger had rounds of 74-72 and his 146 total is 27th. Freshman Billy Kennerly had a counting score of 72 in the first round, then shot a 79 in the second round. He is in 45th place with a 151 score.
