Clemson, SC – Ben Martin fired a one-under par 71 on Sunday to pace Clemson’s golf team at the Carpet Classic in Dalton, GA. Clemson finished 13th in the 18-team field with a 897 score, 33 over par. The three-day event was held at the par 72 Farm Course in Dalton, GA.
Alabama won the team title in a one-hole playoff against South Carolina.
Martin was Clemson’s top golfer on Sunday by six shots. Each of the other four Clemson golfers failed to break 77. Martin’s round included five birdies as he made that score on the 13, 14th, and 16th holes on the back nine, his first nine of the day. He also had a birdie on the third and ninth holes. He would have scored in the 60s had he not made a double bogey on the seventh hole, his 16th of the day.
Martin finished with a 227 score overall for the three days, 53rd place.
Clemson’s top golfer for the tournament was junior David May, who had a 224 for the 54 holes, eight over par. His 44th place finish included a second round 69, the only round in the 60s by a Tiger for the weekend. May had two double bogeys over his final three holes on Sunday to shoot a 79.
Sam Saunders finished with a 225 score for the three days after rounds of 73-74-78. He also had some problems with the seventh hole, making a triple bogey. Saunders finished 48th in the field.
Luke Hopkins finished with a 228 total, good enough for 56th place. He had rounds of 77-74-77.
Kyle Stanley, just back from a trip to Ireland with the United States Walker Cup team, had a 233 total and finished 74th after rounds of 82-74-77.
