Clemson Finished Fourth At Intercollegiate Match Play Championships

Nov. 12, 2000

ESTERO, Fla. — Clemson won four of five head to head matches against the University of Houston and finished fourth at the College Golf Foundation National Intercollegiate Match Play Championships at West Bay Club in Estero, FL. This is the only national match play tournament of the college golf season. The competition concluded the fall golf season for Larry Penley’s second-ranked team.

Earlier, Clemson had lost in the first round to UNLV, 3.5 to 1.5, then defeated Northwestern in a tie breaker. The two teams tied at 2.5 to 2.5, but Clemson won the tie breaker and advanced to meet Houston. Clemson won that match 4-1.

Lucas Glover and John Engler both won their matches over Houston on Sunday. Glover downed Scott Ferguson, 5&3, while Engler defeated Andy Sanders 2UP. Glover and Engler both concluded the weekend with 2-1 records.

Glover defeated US amateur semifinalist Luke Donald of Northwestern 2UP, to highlight his play over the weekend. Engler was Clemson’s only winner in the opening round against UNLV with a 6&4 win over Brandon Askew.

Freshman Gregg Jones, who won the Carolinas Match Play this past summer, had Clemson’s top record over the weekend. He posted a 2-0-1 record, the only Tiger who did not lose in the tournament. Jones tied Travis Whisman of UNLV, then defeated Scott Harrington of Northwestern 4&3 and stopped Brad McIntosh of Houston 1UP.
